What is Coast FIRE?

Coast FIRE means you've invested enough that, without saving another dollar, growth alone will carry your portfolio to your FI number by retirement. From then on, work only has to cover what you spend today, so you could switch to a lower-paying job, work part time, or take a break from saving.

Your coast number is your FI number (retirement spending divided by your withdrawal rate) discounted back to today at your expected return. It rises every year you wait, because there's less time left to grow. The chart's dashed line shows that rising target; you can coast once your portfolio reaches it. All amounts are in today's dollars.
