How compound interest works
Compound interest means you earn interest on your past interest, not just on what you deposited. Early on, most of your balance comes from contributions. Given enough time, growth overtakes them, which is why starting early matters more than almost anything else.
This calculator adds your contribution at the end of each month. If interest compounds less often than monthly, it is converted to the equivalent monthly rate so the yearly yield matches what you chose.
